Road Safety 101
Road Safety 101 is an in-depth study of the fundamentals of road safety. Presented by the Road Safety Academy of the UNC Highway Safety Research Center, this free course designed for individuals new to transportation-related fields or those with limited background knowledge in road safety concepts and strategies. It was developed from the NCHRP 17-40 Model Curriculum for Highway Safety Core Competencies.
After completing this course, students will understand the basics of developing and implementing successful, collaborative road safety programs. Students will gain a better understanding of road safety data collection, analysis, and evaluation.
Course Structure and Schedule
The course consists of weekly, two-hour interactive virtual sessions, along with roughly one hour of independent work and reading to be completed outside of class each week. Course instructors include researchers based at the UNC Highway Safety Research Center, as well as experts from outside organizations and guest speakers representing a variety of perspectives on road safety. In addition to lectures and guest speakers, classes feature interactive discussions and student-led instruction based on work performed outside of class.
