Abstract: Traffic injuries remain unacceptably high in the United States, especially for pedestrians and others outside of vehicles. Current approaches are often reactive and site-specific. The Safe System Approach focuses on preventing serious injuries by addressing the underlying conditions that shape risk. These case studies show how state and local agencies are applying a Safe System approach in practice. They are monitoring and addressing EXPOSURE, SEVERITY, and LIKELIHOOD, and shifting from isolated fixes toward coordinated, system-level strategies that can prevent severe injuries.
