Abstract: Commercial motor vehicle (CMV) ‘enforcement’ activities are intended to ensure carrier compliance with regulations and restrictions enacted to protect both the safety of the motoring public as well as the infrastructure (roads, bridges, etc.) shared by these vehicles. The focus of the present paper is on those enforcement activities intended primarily for safety purposes; driver and vehicle inspections and the enforcement of serious CDL (commercial driver license) traffic violations. While size and weight violations are an important component of CMV enforcement, their contribution to safety is not addressed here.
