Car seat training for early-career healthcare providers in NC

HSRC provides training on car seat basics to local healthcare professionals.HSRC’s child passenger safety research and outreach team – Bevan Kirley, Kristel Robison, Shannen Johnson, and Elizabeth Pinyan – is offering car seat training at research hospitals in North Carolina. The goal is to equip healthcare professionals with basic knowledge about car seat safety and information to pass along to families looking for more assistance.

Parents often ask pediatricians and nurses about correct car seat use. Holding these recent trainings with pediatric residents at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and postpartum nurses at Duke University is a new approach, and a targeted extension of HSRC’s efforts to connect with communities across the state on child passenger safety education and outreach. And since some of these healthcare professionals are early in their careers, it’s a good opportunity to help them recognize where to go for updated information in the future.

“Even though many of the healthcare professionals we worked with during the trainings already had some familiarity with car seats, it was rewarding to see their excitement as they gained new tips they can pass along to families,” said Elizabeth Pinyan, Junior Research Associate.

While this training provides a basic overview of information and tips for this specific audience, it is not a replacement for a car seat check by a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician (who goes through a more intensive four-day, national training course).
