director appointed to HSRC

HSRC welcomes Dr. H.
Doug Robertson, P.E. |
A new director has
been named to head the University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research
Center. Dr. H. Douglas Robertson, P.E., brings a wealth of experience
to the position ranging from work in the public and private sectors
to experience in academia and the military. "I'm very much looking forward
to this opportunity," said Robertson, a former Vice President and Regional
Operations Manager for Science Applications International Corp., in
Alexandria Va. "I've been drawn to the safety field since I first got
into transportation 30 years ago simply because there is such an easy
link of saying the work I'm doing has a positive impact on people's
lives. This is a good place to be."
Representatives from 8 UNC departments and centers recommended Robertson
from a pool of 23 applicants from all over the world. He joined the
Center October 1, 1999. In addition to his position as HSRC Director,
Robertson holds an appointment as Research Associate Professor with
the UNC Department of Health Behavior and Health Education.
Prior to working at SAIC, Robertson was a professor of civil engineering
at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He has also held positions
at ITS America, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration,
the Federal Highway Administration, BioTechnology, Inc., and the U.S.
Army. Throughout his research career, he has served as the principal
investigator on numerous transportation safety studies including work
on symbolic pedestrian signal displays that led to the adoption of the
"hand-walking man" symbols as a national standard for pedestrian signals
in the United States.
