With an aging population in the U.S., the Center explores issues surrounding older drivers. While seniors drive fewer miles per licensed driver compared to younger age groups, they have higher crash rates than any other group except teen drivers.
Through its research, HSRC strives to better understand the factors that contribute to the reduction or cessation of driving by older individuals, and to identify possible remediations to address mobility issues among older drivers.
- On-Road Driver Evaluations
- The Center conducted research to determine the potential use of on-road driving evaluations to assist older drivers in extending their safe driving behavior.
- Guidelines for Reducing Crashes Among Older Drivers
- HSRC researchers contributed towards the guidelines developed thorough the National Cooperative Research Program for the reduction of crashes and fatalities involving older drivers. The guide provides engineering, planning, education, and policy guidance to highway agencies that desire to better accommodate older drivers’ special needs.
