Expert in child maltreatment prevention to deliver 2011 Waller Lecture at UNC

CHAPEL HILL, NC (April 1, 2011) - Ron Prinz, Ph.D., director of the Parenting Family Research Center at the University of South Carolina, will give this year's Patricia F. Waller Lecture at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on April 20.

"Embedding Child-Maltreatment Prevention in a Population Approach to Parenting and Family Support," will be presented at the Stone Center Auditorium at 3:30 p.m. A reception will follow the free public event.

Prinz's lecture pertains in part to the prevention of child maltreatment and injuries, but also interlaces with other goals where parenting plays a key role, such as prevention of social, emotional, behavioral and health problems in children. His research areas include parenting and family-based interventions, strategies for population and community-wide prevention, and the prevention of child maltreatment.

The Waller lecture is held annually in memory of Patricia F. Waller, Ph.D., a professor who founded the UNC Injury Prevention Research Center and was a pioneer in injury control. She worked for nearly two decades as a researcher at the UNC Highway Safety Research Center, where she developed the concept for graduated licensing, which became adopted nationwide.

The lecture is supported by private donations and is sponsored by the Injury Prevention Research Center, the Highway Safety Research Center and the College of Arts and Sciences' Department of Psychology.
