Survey Responses

Many suggestions received through our survey cannot be adopted simply because the data is not available from the crash report form.

We thank everyone for their suggestions and comments! The following table addresses some survey suggestions.

The crash data for buses needs to be a separate category. When counting vehicles, the variable 'Vehicle Style' has several bus categories. Suggest you contact us (see About the Data) for more specific information.
Be able to locate a list of where the crashes occured. GIS information is not available at this time.
ITS deployment statistics with crash data. Those statistics are available at http://www.itsdeployment.its.dot.gov. ITS vehicle solutions are not captured on the crash report form.
How were there 0 crashes in Greenville between 2005-7?Unfortunately, it is not always possible to insert a notice that either scheduled or unscheduled maintenance is underway on some of the servers working behind the scenes for this website. Please contact us (see the About the Data page) if you encounter something like that.
I would love to know of the people who have had injuries and were wearing shoulder belts or lap belts only - How many were people with disabilities. How many were riding from a wheelchair. Count people, not crashes or vehicles. Select two-way table. Select 'Injury Status' and 'Occupant/Motorist Protection' as variables. This will reveal injury by restraint type. Passenger disabilities are not collected on the crash form. Wheelchair is not an item on the crash form; it is possible that a wheelchair would be coded as 'other' in the restraint variable
number of deer vehicle accidents Deer would be covered under the value 'animal' in several places: when counting crashes, the variables 'First Harmful Event' and 'Most Harmful Event'; when counting vehicles, the variables 'Most Harmful Event for vehicle' and the four 'Sequence of Event' variables.
I sometimes need three variables to cross reference. Like, age/seating position/injury status. As well as inputing age instead of groupings and race. Thank you The use of filter variables provides a roundabout way of incorporating a third variable into the mix. Suggest you contact us (see About the Data) for more specific information.
Need animal involved crashes categoryAt the crash level, 'First Harmful Event' and 'Most Harmful Event' indicate animal crashes
You should be able to create tables that include multiple counties at teh same time without having to select and run a table for each county individually. So years X County essentially. There are two regional variables that subdivide counties into groups: NCDOT Division and Highway Patrol Area. Otherwise, the only current solution would be for you to add up the numbers from the individual counties
breakdown by victim ageCount people, and select the variable 'Age'
The website is great. A total among the years selected would be useful. It is nice to have them separated, but a total would make it more useful in some instances. At this time, separate years is all we have available.
Technical DifficultiesUnfortunately, it is not always possible to insert a notice that either scheduled or unscheduled maintenance is underway on some of the servers working behind the scenes. Thank you for your patience. Feel free to contact us (see the About the Data page) if you encounter these issues.
none - it seems very easy to navigate & offers a wide variety of useful informationThank you!
Define the terms. Does alcohol involvement also include drugs? What if a person were using drugs, but not alcohol and got involved in an accident. Would that be counted under alcohol involvement? Variables are documented in the help section. Run a two-way table, counting vehicles and using the variables 'Alcohol-Involved Vehicle Flag' and 'Driver Alcohol/Drugs Suspected' to see the relationship between these two variables. Absent alcohol, drug involvement is not counted as alcohol involvement.
A glossary of what some of the terms mean. And if there is one, let us know where it is. Very helpful overall, though. Thanks. Please refer to "Help", "Variables Used in the Data" and "How to Use the Form"
could not get any information Unfortunately, it is not always possible to insert a notice that either scheduled or unscheduled maintenance is underway on some of the servers working behind the scenes. Thank you for your patience. Feel free to contact us (see the About the Data page) if you encounter these issues.
The crash data I looked at ran through 2007. Why can''t 2008 data be included?2008 data have been added to the site
Excellent website! If there's anyway to include estimated traffic volume for time of day, day of week and location, that would really be helpful in understanding the numbers. Not sure if this is possible though. Unfortunately, traffic volume data is not included with the crash data we obtain for this website.
Add information on crashes by charge involved, such as fail to stop for red light. Violations charged as a result of a crash are not included in the crash data. There is a group of 3 variables, Driver Contributing Circumstances 1-3, that contain similar information.
You may have it, but would the road or intersection be available? Unfortunately, we found that including road name variables created prohibitively large tables that caused problems with the web system.
Provide a way to search/sort by gender, ethnicity AND age at the same time. But, even without a third parameter to enter, this is a great tool. Thanks! Given the current system design, one of those variables would need to become a filter, allowing for a two-way table using the remaining variables. We will consider the filter option.
Include Animal related as a search option First Harmful Event and Most Harmful Event include Animal as a variable value when counting crashes. When counting vehicles, Sequence of Events 1-4 along with Most Harmful Event for Vehicle have Animal as a variable value. We will consider adding these as a filter.
have basic statistics for each category already in a table because it is what is usually wanted; creation of tables for specific info is great! Perhaps adding a static table of the most recent year of crash data for each variable could be helpful. We will consider adding this to the site.
Somewhat --- The location of the accident or a link to that info would be very beneficial to help identify problem areas.  GIS information is not available at this time.
Give is the crash data with coordinates so we can map them GIS information is not available at this time.
you were not able to give me the number of alcohol and speed involved crashes and with drivers ages 16 to 19 Since we are able to run a table with all three filters, there must have been system problems at the time you made your request. Hopefully, you received the message indicating that there were system problems.
you could not give me any figures for 2008

Since we are able to run a table for 2008 data, there must have been system problems at the time you made your request. Hopefully, you received the message indicating that there were system problems. It appears that you may have experienced the same outage as the previous requestor, since your occurred 2 minutes later.

Make data available by road name Unfortunately, we found that including road name variables created prohibitively large tables that caused problems with the web system.
You need to be able to download this data easily into Excel or txt files. This enhancement is under consideration.
You should say what the categories mean (i.e. what does ''missing'' mean when you create the table? Please refer to the section about variables on the website. In general, missing means that the reporting officer did not supply a value.
Supply data that is newer than 2008.Data is added to the site as soon as it is available to us.
Would like to be able to select a specific area such as the jurisdiction of a police department which would normally be 1 mile outside of the City''s Limit. Overall a great tool! Will consider adding this flag to use in conjunction with a city subset.
I need an explanation of what each access control means. Hopefully, I can search your website for definitions. The DMV-349 Instruction Manual is available on the NCDOT DMV website.
Make it easier to find the NC Crash Data website from main page.On the current HSRC website home page, click the "Roadway Design and Traffic Safety" project area. The resulting page includes a link under "Project Web Sites"; alternatively, click the "Websites" tab on the HSRC home page to find the link under "North Carolina Web Sites"
Really, it''s yes and no. I''m looking for crashes related to distracted driving and that wasn''t an option in table creation. However, often times I can find what I am looking for on this site. "driver distracted" is a value found in the Driver Contributing Circumstances variables at the vehicle level
putting more data on a particular searchWe will consider adding three-way tables
Break down of specific roadsWe found that including road name as a variable could create extremely large tables. Please contact Eric Rodgman for these requests.
need state and city maintained roads for city crash data.We found that including road name as a variable could create extremely large tables. Please contact Eric Rodgman for these requests.
provide crash report of drivers between the ages of 18 - 64 years oldThis can be obtained by counting people and running a two-way table of age by person type
distinguish between drug and alcohol collisionsUsing the "Driver Alcohol/Drugs Suspected" variable in a two-way table at the vehicle level will provide some information. Will consider modifying flags to differentiate.
a map Useful mapping will not be possible until standardized geographic coordinates are collected statewide.
Ran the following report- Number of People in Crashes in 2007, 2008, 2009 Location: Statewide Reportability: Reportable Crashes on State-Maintained Roads Injuries: Crashes with fatalities fatal (K) 3,856 100.0 3,307 100.0 3,070 100.0 10,233 100.0 These fatalities are more than double the one provided on NCDOT Dashboard. https://apps.dot.state.nc.us/dot/dashboard/safer.aspx Your numbers reflect all the people in those crashes, not just the fatalities. Run the table using injury status to get the count of fatals.
I''m looking for data on bicycle accidents in Greensboro, NC. I would love to get actual addresses of accidents in order to do a heat-map to track the location of the most dangerous places for bicycling in the city. I''d look to do for Greensboro, what this man did for Davis, CA: http://vort.org/media/data/crashes.html. If you were able to make that data accessible, it would be extremely helpful. Thanks, Francis Kelly francis.kelly@gmail.com Useful mapping will not be possible until standardized geographic coordinates are collected statewide.
Specific locationUseful mapping will not be possible until standardized geographic coordinates are collected statewide.
Make it more specific. Want to know how many teens killed. Not the number of people in the wrecks. A table of age by injury would reveal that information.
it was useful, but something about it just didnt flow well for me. hard to figure out ways to combine data This is a complex offering to the public. Any suggestions about navigational flow that would help users would be appreciated.
Make it easier to find on the internet. A general search does not bring up the site. We're looking into that - thanks for the suggestion! If you search for 'North Carolina Crash Data' or 'NC crash data' our site is the 1st, 2nd and 3rd listing in Google, and 1st or 2nd in Bing. Could you please respond to the survey again with your search terms?
I''d like to see data pertaining to red light cameras and crashes at intersections with them Since there is no data item on the crash report form relating to red-light cameras, we are unable to help with that.
Add accidents that were caused because of text messaging The current crash report form does not have a value for driver contributing circumstances related to text messaging. That value is likely to be included in a future version of the crash report form. Once it is available in the data, tables can be generated using the value.
searchability by highway and mile marker or between junctions. This would be a complex addition to the website. We will discuss the possibility.
I wanted all counties and I only got Alamance. It is pretty difficult to use! If you want data for all counties, please run a statewide query. By choosing county as one of the variables in a two-way table, you will see the breakdown across counties.
Output data on the individual record level - not as aggregate data. This site is intended to allow users to explore aggregated crash data.
needs better search engine. Took me a long time to find the teenage driving statistics. If you have difficulty finding your way when using the site, please call one of the numbers shown on the 'About the Data' page.
The ability to find crash statistics for a specific location ie. intersections Unfortunately, the scope of the project does not include querying at such a granular level.
Include animals in the filtering process. There is a code for collision with animal. At the crash level, it can be found in First Harmful Event and Most Harmful Event. At the vehicle level, it can be found in Most Harmful Event for Vehicle, and in the four Sequence of Event variables.
I would like to be able to select all counties. Thank you If you want data for all counties, please run a statewide query. By choosing county as one of the variables in a two-way table, you will see the breakdown across counties.
Ethnicity is spelled wrong in the tables. Thank you for pointing this out!
Need 2010 data We will add the 2010 data as soon as we receive the data. The web site update is likely to occur in September.
Ideally, if the site could be refined to become route specific would be great. Good general info. We will consider adding route as a filtering variable.
The ability to download raw data sets would be incredibly useful for those who have access to various statistical and database softwares. This site is intended to allow users to explore aggregated crash data.
