Years of data

Check the box next to one or more years to count reportable crashes from those years. Reportable crashes are those that occur on publicly-maintained roads and meet the $1000 damage threshold. This is the default set of crash data used for the tables you create. You can later choose to include non-reportable crashes as well if you wish.

Crashes vs. Vehicles vs. People

Imagine a crash between three cars, one containing one person, the second containing two people, and the third containing five people. This scenario would yield one crash, three vehicles, and eight people. It's up to you which of these you want to count.

Include non-reportable crashes

Reportable crashes are those that occur on publicly-maintained roads and meet the $1000 damage threshold. This is the default set of crash data used for the tables you create. If you check the box that says "include non-reportable crashes," the data will also include crashes in parking lots, driveways, and other non-publicly maintained areas, as well as those causing less than $1000 in damage.

In addition to geographic area and crash injury level, you can also filter the data by driver age, alcohol involvement, and the involvement of a bicyclist, pedestrian, motorcycle or large vehicles. The large vehicles include commercial buses and larger trucks with 6 or more tires. If you check more than one of these boxes, you will be filtering for crashes, vehicles or people where all selected conditions were met. For instance, if you select "crashes" above, then check the boxes next to "driver age 16-19" and "pedestrian," you will get a count of crashes that involved both a driver age 16 to 19 and a pedestrian.

When you choose to count "vehicles" or "people", two columns of filtering options appear. The left column is labeled "Crash filters:" and the right column is labeled "Vehicle filters:" Checking boxes in the left column selects crashes having the characteristic(s) you select. Every vehicle or person in the crash is counted. Checking boxes in the right column selects vehicles having the characteristic(s) you select. Only those vehicles are counted, ignoring the other vehicles in the crash. For instance, given the crash pictured here, checking "Driver age 75 or older" in the left column would yield counts of 3 vehicles and 8 people - all the vehicles would be counted since one vehicle has a 77-year-old driver. However, checking "Driver age 75 or older" in the right column would yield counts of 1 vehicle and 2 people - only the vehicle with the 77-year-old driver would be counted, and only the people in the vehicle driven by the 77-year-old would be counted.

More than one box may be checked. Reading the following example will help the user understand how the selections interact. Suppose the 37-year-old driver in the pictured crash had been drinking. Checking both "Alcohol Involvement" and "Driver age 75 or older" in the left-hand column would yield 3 vehicles and 8 people, because the crash meets both requirements. Checking both "Alcohol-Involved Driver" and "Driver age 75 or older" in the right-hand column would yield 0 vehicles and 0 people because no vehicle in the crash had a drinking driver age 75 or older. Checking "Alcohol-Involvement" in the left column and "Driver age 75 or older" in the right column yields 1 vehicle and 2 people (veh #2), because the crash meets the alcohol filter with the 37-year-old drinking driver and the vehicle with the 77-year-old driver meets the driver age filter. Checking "Driver age 75 or older" in the left column and "Alcohol-Involved Driver" in the right column yields 1 vehicle and 5 people (veh #3). This time the crash is selected because of the older driver and only the vehicle with the drinking driver and its occupants are counted because that is the vehicle with the drinking driver.

Order for values

This option controls the order in which variable values appear in your output table. The order that you choose will be dependent on the variable that you are looking at, and what you want it to show. For instance, if you choose Day of Week as your variable, you probably don't want it to be alphabetical order, but rather in the order that they naturally occur (Sunday, Monday, Tuesday...), so you would select the "dates or numbers" radio button.
