Mary Ellen Tucker, M.L.S.

Librarian

Mary Ellen’s overall responsibilities include provision of library and research information support services to Highway Safety Research Center staff. In this capacity, she tracks forthcoming research opportunities, performs preliminary research on new projects, and maintains a system that tracks the Center’s corporate research experience. In addition, she works with the Center’s Web Development Team to create, develop and maintain Internet sites for HSRC and other Center-maintained Internet resources. Her career is focused on improving access to safety information, both to HSRC research staff members and to the public, especially through application of electronic technology.

The HSRC Library maintains one of the few collections in the world devoted solely to the subject of traffic safety. Mary Ellen manages the HSRC Library collections and the Center’s Research Archives. Our library is an associate member of OCLC, the Online Computer Library Center , an international consortium of libraries. Reorganization of the HSRC Library began in 1993, and is an ongoing body of work. Records of HSRC library holdings are contributed to the main online library catalog of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill , making the HSRC Library catalog accessible worldwide. HSRC Library catalog records use the Library of Congress Classification and Subject Headings, and conform to OCLC-MARC standards for our catalog records.

Mary Ellen is a Past Chair of the Transportation Division of the Special Libraries Association, and is currently developing an Internet site for the Division for contributed reviews of transportation-related books, reports, and other publications. She is a member of the Librarians’ Association at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill .

Before joining the HSRC staff in 1993, Mary Ellen worked as an information specialist for the NIOSH-sponsored Occupational Safety and Health Educational Resource Center , a unit of the UNC School of Public Health.

Mary Ellen’s personal interests include exploring the byways and back roads of North Carolina , caring for her pets, and hiking and gardening at her home in Chatham County , where she tends a collection of Japanese maples. In addition, she is a student of the martial art, Aikido.
