Zoe Gillenwater
Design Services Manager
Zoe Gillenwater joined the Highway Safety Research Center as a design specialist in September 2003, bringing experience in journalism, multimedia, graphic design, and studio art to the communications arm of the HSRC.
In her position, Zoe designs and develops web site interfaces and components, creating integral resources in HSRC’s public information efforts. She serves as the technical lead on the HSRC’s central web site, providing usability, design, and technical recommendations and assistance. Zoe also maintains the HSRC’s other web sites, including those for the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center , and assists in the development of new web tools, such as the Pedestrian Safety Guide and Countermeasure Selection System.
Zoe also utilizes her graphic design skills creating printed promotional and informational material, including reports, brochures and posters. She has experience in illustration and photography and creates graphics for use in both web and printed materials.
Before coming to the HSRC, Zoe served as the webmaster and graphic designer at the Rivers Agency, a full-service advertising agency in Chapel Hill , NC , for three years. She worked as the agency’s first web designer, allowing the company to develop a web development business for the first time. Her work involved design, construction, and project management of web sites for a variety of clients, including wholesalers, small businesses and non-profits. She was also involved with traditional graphic design work, creating printed promotional materials to complement clients’ online identities and branding.
Zoe graduated from the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in Visual Communication, multimedia emphasis. There she gained experience creating informational and educational multimedia presentations combining text, graphics, video, audio, and animation, as well as copy writing and editing skills, which she continues to use in her professional career.
Zoe also spent time in Los Angeles at the University of Southern California studying fine arts. She currently lives in Carrboro, NC, with her husband Cary.
