Austin Brown

Program Specialist

Austin Brown is a Program Specialist for the National Center for Safe Routes to School (NCSRTS). He joined the NCSRTS in July 2006 after working at the Highway Research Center for the previous eight months and interning with the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center during the summer of 2004.

Mr. Brown’s work and education has focused on the relationship between the built environment, physical activity, health and safety. He holds two master’s degrees from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, one in public health and the other in regional planning.

Mr. Brown has assisted in writing and editing technical and descriptive materials related to SRTS and attended the Safe Routes to School National Course. He has experience using the Walkability and Bikeability Suitability Assessment to conduct infrastructure assessments around elementary schools.

While completing his graduate degrees, Mr. Brown worked on several interdisciplinary research teams, including managing project components from data collection to report writing. His experience ranges from working on pedestrian and bicycle safety issues to researching policies that influence physical activity and measuring associations between built environment attributes and physical activity.
