Projects by County in North Carolina (January 2008 – present)

Since January 2008, HSRC has conducted projects in 41 counties in the state of North Carolina in addition to 5 statewide projects outlined below. The listed below includes all of the counties in which HSRC has conducted projects since January 2008 and a brief description of each project in that particular county.

Statewide

  • HSRC operates the NC Child Passenger Safety (CPS) Resource Center funded by the NC Governor's Highway Safety Program to:
    • Help coordinate state of NC and local CPS education, training, distribution, and "hands-on" technical assistance programs and activities.
    • Serve as a centralized source for North Carolina specific information where:
      • Parents and other caregivers/transporters can receive timely, accurate, and consistent information about the NC occupant restraint laws and the correct use of restraint systems for children and youth,
      • Agencies wishing to establish or revitalize their local educational, distribution, or technical assistance programs can find program information and learn about training opportunities, and
      • Promotional and technical CPS related materials are developed and/or distributed.
  • Copies of teen distracted driving video distributed to nearly 500 public high schools in all counties within North Carolina
  • As national coordinating agency for International Walk to School Day, HSRC supported 54 events across North Carolina.
  • Provided technical assistance and support to the North Carolina Safe Routes to School State Coordinator who distributes funds to schools across North Carolina.
  • Ongoing project with NC State University on procedure for curve warning signing, delineation, and advisory speeds for horizontal curves.

Buncombe County (1)

  • Observational surveys conducted to measure the extent to which the new NC law prohibiting cell phone use by teenagers while driving affected their behavior

Cabarrus County (2)

  • Surveys to evaluate the effectiveness of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol's enforcement and public education effort to reduce aggressive driving around large trucks.
  • Assistance with motor vehicle crash data/information to identify local crash safety problems.

Carteret County (1)

Catawba County (1)

  • Assistance with motor vehicle crash data/information to identify local crash safety problems
