Highway safety has come a long way in the years since HSRC was established by the North Carolina General Assembly in 1965. In terms of miles driven, motor-vehicle related deaths in the U.S. are only one-third as likely as they were 30 years ago. Despite such progress, between 40,000 and 43,000 deaths still occur on U.S. highways every year.
For over 40 years, the University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center has been a leading research institute that has helped shape the field of transportation safety. The Center’s mission is to improve the safety, security, access and efficiency of all surface transportation modes through a balanced, interdisciplinary program of research, evaluation and information dissemination.
